Data integrity after backup restore

Postby capcolliedog » Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:38 am

We are new users of Retail Man but are having problems with what looks like data corruption. Because of this we are reluctant to trust the software. We have used the export facility several times and find that often (but not always), when exporting our stock file in Excel format, the data isn't displayed properly in the table view before the actual export to file. We've got round that by exporting as tab delimited.

However, the more worrying thing is that having done a backup restore, what looks like most of our product quantities have been altered significantly. We follow instructions to reindex files and this process halts on the invoice file where we get an error message saying "file in use". So we close the package down and reindex again. Now it halts with a different error "record out of range" on the recalculate cost prices task. We press ignore several times to bypass this problem and it finishes reindexing at which point we look at our stock file to see the altered and obviously wrong product quantities.

Ironically, if we don't reindex the files, the product quantities seem to stay correct. We are not using the full function of Retail Man but if it can't manage our product quantity data properly then it's of no use to us. Can anyone restore our trust in the product by suggesting what procedures we should be following when restoring backups and reindexing files?

Cheers, Si Taylor

Since posting above, we've repeated backup restores several times. After restoring, when the file indexing screen appears, If we leave the "Recalculate" and "Repost" options unchecked, we seem to retain our data integrity. There's little information in our user manual about the various options and what the consequences are of checking or not checking the various lines. I think we'd be forgiven for thinking that every line should be checked - however, that's when the errors seem to occur...

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback. We normally recommend that when doing an re-index that on the 7 boxes on the left are ticked. This means that no transactions are reposted.
